While out searching for new international flavors, we found a treasure in Harrisonburg, Virginia; the real "mixto" Cuban sandwich. The story goes that "mixto" was very popular in the kiosks, coffee bars and casual restaurants, especially in the big cities such as Havana or Santiago. After Fidel Castro’s rise to power in 1959, the "mixto" tradition traveled along with Cuban expatriates fleeing from the Castro regime. By the mid 1960's it became popular among the residents of Miami, Puerto Rico, New York, New Jersey and Chicago. However, many variations of the "mixto" surfaced, thus creating criticism among traditionalists.

Nowadays, to find the real thing is unique. So, Artiles Restaurant, owned by a family from Cuba, is proud to offer the authentic and world famous "mixto cubano". The combination of this delight lies in its simplicity, yet exquisite taste from the cut of a Cuban style loaf of bread, generously stuffed with slices of Virginia ham (sorry, no Cuban ham), fresh roasted pork, Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles. The seasoning of the fresh roasted pork is called, "mojo". This unique flavor, coupled with free range quality meat and a special method for pressing to grill the sandwich, will transport you to Havana. Guaranteed.

Artiles Restaurant is located in Harrisonburg, VA.
