DETAILS
Forward/Adelante had the privilege to participate in the Jaime Escalante Leadership Camp held at the University of Virginia's Darden Graduate School of Business Administration on June 19th. This camp is one component of LEAD, a program that selects 30 academically gifted diverse high school students from around the country to attend a top-tier business school such as Darden. On the last day of their 3-week program, LEAD students participated in a second phase called the Jaime Escalante Leadership Camp, in which local high school students spent a full day being mentored by advanced LEAD students. Paul T. Harper, MBA graduate of Darden School and director of the LEAD program, explained that the theme for this year's LEAD program was "social media and business strategies". Harper, along with Gloria Rockhold, community engagement officer for Albemarle County Public Schools, spearheaded the first Escalante Camp. Students had the opportunity to engage in conversation with Jonathan Mariner, Executive Vice President and CFO of Major League Baseball (and UVA graduate); Ric Ramsey, CEO of LEAD Program in Business; and Dr. Luvelle Brown, CIO of Albemarle County Schools.
